Shingles are caused by Herpes Zoster, the very same virus that causes chickenpox. So if you have ever had chickenpox (like 90% of the population in Western industrialized countries), you have the Herpes Zoster virus somewhere in you and you can get shingles.
Shingles can become painful at times, but there are painkillers for that. However, it cannot be cured, but the symptoms can be treated with so-called virustatica and antiseptics. The disease usually takes about three weeks until it dies down. Until then, shingles do take quite a bit of energy out of you. Mood swings, temporary depression, and lack of drive are typical.
